Welcome to the Women’s Health Research Unit Website!

The Women’s Health Research Unit (WHRU) is housed at the Institute of Population Health(IPH) at the University of Ottawa. With support from the Ontario Women’s Health Council and the faculties of Health Sciences, Law, Social Sciences, and Medicine, the WHRU was created in 2003 with Dr. Carol Amaratunga as the inaugural Director and Chair in Women's Health Research.

Today, we provide local, provincial, national, and international leadership in gender-sensitive research and scholarship in women’s health, specifically applied health policy.

As our mission, the Women’s Health Research Unit promotes the recognition of gender as an important factor that determines health and well being. We generate new knowledge in women’s health through gender-sensitive research; we share knowledge and build capacity through education, training, and mentorship; and we apply knowledge in partnership with clinicians, policy-makers, researchers, labour and community leaders to develop policy and social action that is informed by research evidence.

Through this website we are pleased to offer you information about our activities in research, education and training, and community engagement. If you don’t find the information you need, or if you want to share ideas for new initiatives, please contact us at whru@uottawa.ca.
